OPTICAL ACADEMY PROVIDES ON-SITE EYE EXAMS, EYEWEAR, AND SAME-DAY GLASSES FOR OVER 30,000 TEMPORARY HOUSING STUDENTS

Optical Academy is providing more than 30,000 temporary housing students and over 30 schools with on-site eye exams, eyewear, and same-day labs in just 16-weeks for the New York City Department of Education (NYCDOE).

“We love our partnership with the NYCDOE who believes in us and our onsite eye care program to provide better care for the most fragile students of NYC.  In New York alone, we provide hundreds of thousands of students with the best on-site eye care and eyewear; helping each child grow and learn in the classroom and live their life to the fullest.    We are excited to show what we can do with our proven on-site model while helping every child see a beautiful day, every day,” said Abby Ayoub, CEO, Optical Academy.

New York City is one of the most fragile and diverse school systems in the U.S., and they understand that all children need to have access to the best vision care to support their students.  Optical Academy provides more than eye care; they tailor their communication and services for educators, administrators, children and their parents helping them understand the need for a comprehensive eye exam beyond a basic vision screening.

Ayoub said, “Screenings are basic and commonplace across our nation’s schools.  More than 70% of those that fail a screening never get a real eye exam.  Basic screenings often hurt more than help when compared to a proper eye exam because a screening cannot identify the unseen issues, such as color-blindness.  Schools are going digital and educators using smartboards and computers means a child who is color-blind can’t see all the colors and struggle to keep pace with their peers. That’s why Optical Academy brings eye exams, eyewear and same-day glasses to the schools of New York and other states.  Having our lab on-site means children get their glasses and do what they do best – explore, discover and learn.”

The statistics say a lot about what needs to change in schools across the United States.  Optical Academy’s partnership with the NYCDOE is at the forefront in making change a reality and affordable.

Key Statistics:

  • 80% of what a child learns is through their eyes and before a child turns 12 years old.
  • Over 90% of children needing glasses don’t have them or even know they need them.
  • Over 25% of school-aged children in the US have a severe vision problem that affects their learning, and over 90% of these problems can be treated and corrected right on-site.

“With the learning and expertise gained from our partnership with New York’s DOE and DOH, Optical Academy is now in conversations with similar organizations across the country. We have changed the delivery of eye care locally.  With the help of our partners, we listened, we learned and are now positioned to make a positive change, nationwide,” said Kris Knopf, CRO of Optical Academy.

OPTICAL ACADEMY & NEW JERSEY EDUCATION ASSOCIATION (NJEA) HELP EVERYONE “SEE A BEAUTIFUL DAY, EVERY DAY”

Optical Academy announced they will be onsite at Camden Dudley Elementary, Camden, New Jersey, this weekend to provide more than 350 students and their families with free eye exams and glasses.

This Saturday, 10/29/2016, in partnership with the New Jersey Education Association (NJEA) and Camden Education Association and Community Schools, will host a free vision care event at Camden Dudley Elementary School located at 2250 Berwick Street, Camden, NJ, 08105.

The Camden Education Association knows that 80% of what their students learn begins with how well a child sees.  For the 70% of students who fail a school vision screening, many of whom can’t afford a comprehensive eye exam and glasses, there’s hope.

“Our educators lead with their hearts every day and the parents of our students rely on us to help ensure their children get the best learning experience in one of the most economically challenged and dangerous cities in the US.  For many, the school setting is a home away from home and we are committed to ensure every child can see properly, accelerate their learning and achieve their dreams, now and into the future.  Changing their lives today, creates future leaders, doctors, CEOs, teachers, moms and dads of tomorrow,” said Nancy Holmes, NJEA Field Representative.

As a valued NJEA partner, Optical Academy has provided onsite eye exams and eyewear for NJEA leaders, schools and communities for more than 6 years.  This weekend’s event will also include Optical Academy’s newest company, “See A Beautiful Day, Every Day” (SABDED). SABDED is a non-profit company that provides free onsite comprehensive vision care, exams and glasses for those who lack access and the ability to pay for proper eye care, locally and nationally.  Following a brief ribbon cutting ceremony, SABDED and Optical Academy will begin seeing students and their families.

“We are so thankful and appreciative of our partnership with the NJEA.  Through the Camden Education Association and Community Schools grant program we will have all hands on deck and no one will be turned away.  While the event is expected to have between 350-400 attendees, we will be onsite to see everyone that attends because everyone deserves to see a beautiful day – every day,” said Abby Ayoub, CEO of Optical Academy and SABDED.

See A Beautiful Day, Every Day started in 2016 with one focus – helping others get proper vision care who need it most. While they have held numerous events throughout the past year, this weekend will commemorate their official launch as the company goes national in 2017.

“We are overwhelmed with excitement about our newest program and through our most valued partnerships with NJEA and other community focused organizations who are giving back to the communities they serve.  Giving the gift of sight to children who are under-served and lack access to proper vision care gives them a brighter future so they get to dream without limits, live out loud, and have a real chance at a better future by making a difference, now,” said Ayoub.

HOW AND WHY OPTICAL ACADEMY DISRUPTED THE OPTICAL INDUSTRY WITH COMMUNITY EVENTS

CLIFTON, N.J.April 12, 2016 /PRNewswire-iReach/ — Please watch us LIVE, UNEDITED and UNFILTERED to see why we call it Magical Chaos!

At first, you will see a beautiful community, educatorsand families coming together, laughing, enjoying eye exams, freedom, safety, food, and beautiful faces with beautifully designed eyewear and, finally, all walking out with their eyewear and being able to see a beautiful day, every day!

What you won’t see in this video is the three women who have blood behind their eyes because of domestic physical abuse. You won’t see the two children who have endured abuse. You won’t see the two children who are legally blind. We saw these people, through their eyes. They came to us at our community events and we were able to treat them, and in some cases correct their vision. They would never have been allowed to be seen by an eye care professional because the abuser would not have allowed it.  But because we held an event in the child’s school, they had access to high-quality care.

You won’t see the child who walked around for four years with a lens he found and carried, using it when he needed to see in his right eye because his family could not afford to get him an eye exam and glasses.  You won’t see the father that cried with joy because we supplied his whole family with eye exams and glasses he couldn’t pay for because he can’t get a job because he is ill.  You won’t see the 20 children that say they want to work for the Optical Academy when they grow up because we are nice.  You won’t see the families that have become friends and look to us for more than just eye care. There are many many things you won’t see in our Magical Chaos, but we do! We see it, we examine it, and we treat it, right ON-SITE!

Optical Academy has the humble opportunity to help a community in one day. We see and treat what most eye care professionals do not see in their whole career!  We will see the community that will never step a foot into a private practice for MANY reasons! Do you want to know why? Because they feel they cannot communicate, whether because of a language barrier, trauma, lack of money, not knowing where to go or what to say, or simply that they have no time.

THIS IS WHY WE WILL NOT STOP DELIVERING ON-SITE EYECARE AND EYEWEAR IN THE PLACES OUR COMMUNITY NEED IT MOST, WHERE THEY CAN FEEL SAFE AND CAREDFOR!

“WE MET, RUBBED SHOULDERS AND PROVIDED A SAFE HAVEN FOR A VARIETY OF FAMILIES. OVER 80% OF THE PEOPLEWE EXAMINED NEEDED EYEWEAR… THATS AWESOME!!! IMAGINE THAT COMMUNITY WITHOUT OPTICAL ACADEMY, BECAUSE I CAN’T. IT MAY SEEM RAW BUT THATS HOW ITS HANDED TO US AND THATS HOW WE HANDLE WHAT WE DO ON A DAY IN AND DAY OUT BASIS. YOU PUT ALL YOUR PROBLEMS ASIDE WHEN YOU SEE AN URGENCY UNFOLD RIGHT IN FRONT YOU. I HAD THE PRIVLEDGE OF WORKING AND ASSISTING IN COORDINATING THIS EVENT AND NEVER IN MANY YEARS OF WORKING MANY PLACES HAVE I BEEN ABLE TO SEE THE FRUITS OF MY LABOR RESULT IN SUCH A POSTIVE OUTCOME AND EFFECT SO MANY FAMILIES. I CAN’T WAIT TO DO IT AGAIN!” – DEMETRIUS DIAZ EVENT COORDINATOR
